AirAsia's 2nd quarter revenue rises 9pc to RM1.18b

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd's revenue rose nine per cent to RM1.18 billion for its second quarter ended June 30 2012 from RM1.08 billion last year.

The budget carrier said the revenue growth was supported by 10 per cent growth in passenger volume while the average fare was eight per cent higher at RM177 as compared to RM164 achieved in its second quarter last year.

"Ancillary income per passenger year-on-year reduced by 18 per cent to RM37 from RM45. The seat load factor was one percentage point lower at 80 per cent compared with 81 per cent in the same period last year," it said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

AirAsia carried 4.90 million passengers in its second quarter. Its chief executive officer, Aireen Omar said based on forward bookings, the demand remains positive as the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period will push for strong load factors in its third quarter this year.

Meanwhile, AirAsia posted a higher profit after tax of RM1.19 billion, up 1,046 per cent, from RM104.25 million last year. However, its net operating profit dipped three per cent to RM130.94 million from RM135.17 million a year ago.

Aireen said despite the majority of airlines losing money or severely behind in their earnings, the budget carrier continued to outperform each quarter by posting healthy profits.

"Our cash position remains strong with RM2.16 billion in cash and bank balances, net gearing remains low at 1.10 times while our EBITDAR and EBIT margins were 32 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively," she said in a press statement.

Aireen added that the budget carrier now recognised profit from its affiliates Thai AirAsia of RM11.9 million and Asian Aviation Centre of Excellence of RM2.2 million.

"This is yet another affirmation of what we have always maintained that our affiliates and adjacency business will contribute healthily to our bottomline whilst not including Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, AirAsia Japan and AirAsia Expedia.

"Eventually when they grow to a larger scale, the company can stand to benefit larger contribution to the bottom line," she said.
