Heavyweights lift Malaysian market

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia ended higher yesterday despite a lukewarm regional market with heavyweights Petronas Chemicals and Sime Darby lifting buying sentiment.

At the close, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) finished 5.84 points higher at 1,520.09 after opening 2.78 points better at 1,517.03.

Kenanga Research said should the FBM KLCI overcome its make-or-break resistance at 1,520 points level, it was poised to test a higher resistance level of 1,529.5/1,533.

Otherwise, the market baramoter would continue to consolidate and retrace its downtrend support line of 1,460, it said in a technical report.

The Plantation Index added 3.25 points to 7,751.93, the Finance Index rose 36.97 points to 13,786.82 and the Industrial Index gained 20.87 points to 2,826.91.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Emas Index advanced 49.09 points to 10,457.28, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Mid 70 Index earned 42.92 points to 11,196.46 and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia ACE Index climbed 17.84 points to 4,322.09.

Advancers outpaced decliners 543 to 264 while 269 counters were unchanged, 352 untraded and 33 others were suspended.

Turnover rose to 1.756 billion shares worth RM2.182 billion from 1.280 billion shares worth RM1.613 billion on Monday.

Pos Malaysia gained 9 sen to RM3.41 after news report that Khazanah had already shortlisted DRB-HICOM, Nationwide Express Courier Services and a Amanah REIT-Malaysia Pacific Corp joint venture to acquire its 32.2 per cent stake in the company.

ECS-ICT Bhd, which was just awarded the distributorship for Apple iPad in Malaysia, perked 6 sen to RM1.60.

Actives Leweko inched up 5 sen to 26 sen, Naim Indah edged up 1.5 sen to 8 sen and Perisai Petroleum added 4 sen to 81 sen.

Heavyweights Maybank jumped 3 sen to RM8.78, CIMB Group perked 1 sen to RM8.11, Petronas Chemicals rose 23 sen to RM7.18 and Sime Darby increased 9 sen to RM9.19.

Meanwhile, the FBM KLCI futures on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed higher, buoyed by a firmer cash market, dealers said.

March 2011 and April 2011 rose 9.5 points each to 1,522 and 1,520, respectively, June 2011 increased 10 points to 1,519 and September 2011 was 8.5 points higher at 1,517.

Turnover rose to 22,325 lots from 18,298 lots on Monday, while open interests increased to 26,561 contracts from 19,393 contracts recorded previously. - Bernama
