EPF declares 5.8pc dividend for 2010

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) today announced a 5.8 per cent dividend for the year ended Dec 31, 2010, slightly higher than the 5.65 per cent given out in 2009.

In a statement issued today, EPF Chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said, "The remarkable investment income achieved in 2010 was especially driven by the performance of equity investments.

"The improved financial and economic conditions provided the market with sufficient liquidity, allowing profit taking activities throughout the year."

The RM21.61 billion dividend payout is the highest in the history and a 11.55 per cent increase compared with the RM19.37 billion paid out in 2009, said Samsudin in a statement today.

Samsudin said EPF's earning of RM24.06 billion was also the highest in the history of Malaysia's largest pension fund, beating the previous amount of RM17.22 billion earned in 2009.

In previous years, EPF had announced dividends of 5.8 per cent for 2007, 5.15 per cent for 2006 and 5 per cent for 2005 while the highest dividend rate paid was 8.5 per cent in 1983 and 1986.

EPF is regarded as the sixth largest fund in Asia with a total asset of more than RM312 billion.

He expressed confidence that the prospect and momentum would continue in 2011.
