Tabung Haji Announces 5 Per Cent Bonus For 2009

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- Tabung Haji on Wednesday announced a bonus of five per cent for last year with an estimated total payout of RM1.1 billion to its eligible depositors.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, when announcing this at a press conference here, said although 2009 was a challenging year, Tabung Haji was still able to do well.

"This is translated with the competitive bonus given to depositors," he said.

Tabung Haji, which announced the same rate last year, had declared a 2.25 per cent interim bonus in September last year with a total payout of RM465 million.

"If a comparison is made on the rate of returns by commercial banks for fixed deposits and savings, it is obvious that the annual bonus given by Tabung Haji has always been at a very competitive rate," said Jamil Khir.

He said Tabung Haji would pay the bonus to its 5.1 million depositors on Monday (Feb 8).

Accumulated depositors' savings in Tabung Haji increased by 12 per cent to RM23 billion last year from RM20.6 billion in 2008.

Jamil Khir said Tabung Haji might be able to pay a higher bonus for this year now that the economy was recovering.

For 2009, Tabung Haji recorded a revenue of RM1.7 billion and RM1.1 billion in profit after paying tithe.
