RM1m loss for warehouse

ALOR STAR: A warehouse storing rubber shoes in Mergong Industrial Area here was razed to the ground on Thursday.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Nur Ariffin Kamari estimated losses from the blaze at more than RM1 million.

No one was injured as all the employees of the warehouse had returned home.

Firemen rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a passers-by and took about 30 minutes to control the fire, he said.

He added the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

The warehouse operator, Ooi Kim Bam, 47, was shocked by the incident.

"I was in town on some business when a friend told me of the fire," he said at the scene, yesterday.

Quick action by staff of Kolej Poly-Tech Mara campus here prevented 12 cars and MPVs parked at a covered garage from being razed in fire.
The vehicles belonged to the department heads and lecturers.

Fortunately, no one was injured in frantic efforts to save the building and the vehicles.

A witness, who wanted to be known only as Mokhtar, said he and several people used 15 fire extinguishers to put out the fire but it spread rapidly.

A department spokesman said half of the one-storey building housing storerooms were damaged in the fire which occurred around noon, with losses estimated at about RM150,000.
