Health insurance for plantation workers
MALACCA: Employers must pay for the health insurance of maids and foreign workers in the plantation sector, said Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S.Subramaniam.
He said for other sectors, it was up to the employer and employee to work out an arrangement as to who pays for the coverage.
Dr Subramaniam said this when asked to comment on the step taken by the government to make it compulsory for foreign employees to have health insurance with annual premium of RM120 effective Jan 1.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai was quoted as saying the step was necessary as it was costing the government RM18 million a year to treat foreign workers at government hospitals and that the cost was ever increasing. - BERNAMA
